  7.     In most years, about 30% of all credit cards are in the
  8. penalty box, stashed away by consumers who are trying to get
  9. their spending under control. But these aren't normal times.
  10. Right now, fully half of Citicorp's 30 million Visa and
  11. MasterCards are dormant. To chairman John Reed, that's
  12. worrisome. As the largest issuer of such cards, Citicorp relies
  13. on the profit from those operations (last year: $610 million)
  14. to offset disasters like the depression in commercial real
  15. estate. As Americans get serious about whittling down their
  16. debts, the profit cushion for many bankers is getting
  17. uncomfortably thin.
